Alex – Disquieten Downs

It races about. Running to strengthen. Running to punish. Running to not stay still.
The scenery doesn’t change much. And tedium is a concern.
But, every so often, a finish line appears in the distance.
And so it sprints. Lungs burning. Legs throbbing. Wind exhilarating.
And it draws close.
And a suspicion sneaks upon it.
“Haven’t I been here before?”
The bound is crossed. Hands meet knees. Breath is short. Heart is worse for wear.
But it refuses rest.
Head down, it conjures the will to trudge forward.
Best move before it catches sight of a reflection.
Best move before that mountain trail is noticed.
Best move, once again, around the track.
For, what it lacks in scenery it more than makes up for by being soft on the knees.
